IELTS Speaking test is divided into 3 parts, takes about 11-14 minutes, and it gets harder and more complicated as it moves toward the end.
Today, I will tell you about Speaking Part 1.
IELTS Speaking Part 1 is a casual conversation. The invigilator could you anywhere from you friends and family to your shopping habits. It can literally be any topics in a casual conversation.
To name a few, the following topics are the common ones:
– Name
– Hometown
– Work
– Education
– Sports
– Accommodation/ Home
– Travelling
– Transport
– Garden
– Museums
– Photography
– Domestic Chores
– Sky
– Clothes
– Color
– Hairstyles
– Television
– Internet
– Food
– Hobbies
– Weather
– Letter & Email
– Friends
– Music
– Languages
– Nightlife
– Computers
– Tea & Coffee
– Shoes
– Sunglasses
– Reading
– Gifts
– Shopping
– Generations
– Games
– Noise
– Patience
– Movies
– Newspaper
– Health
The most common ones they start the test with are your NAME, WHERE YOU LIVE, and WHAT YOU DO.
I’ll give you some examples:
1) What is your name?
2) Where do you live?
3) Do you work or study?
They can also ask you several extended questions of each type:
1) What is your name?
2) Who gave you your name?
3) Where do you live?
4) Do you live in a house or an apartment?
5) Do you work or study?
6) What do you like or dislike about your job?
In Part 1 of your Speaking Test, you would need to speak for about 4 minutes. When it’s time, the invigilator will let you know or stop you in the middle, so don’t feel agitated – it’s totally normal and it’s O.K… don’t panic.
Depending on your speed, you could get anywhere from 2 to 10 questions in Part 1. The number of questions doesn’t really matter as long as you are answering them correctly and thoroughly. I would say try to aim between 4-8 questions (When I took the test, I was asked about 8 questions in Part 1 because I talked way too fast).
With so many topics to cover, you have a lot to do!
IELTS Speaking Test isn’t easy, but also not unachievable!
If you are a beginner, getting started with a professional (like tutoring or academies) could help and save time in the beginning.
Regarding Part 2 and 3, I will explain more in detail in a different post.
