The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is offered in two formats: Academic and General Training. The choice between the two depends on the purpose for which you are taking the test. Here are the main differences between IELTS Academic and General Training:

1.Key Difference:

  • IELTS Academic: This version is typically taken by individuals who plan to pursue higher education at universities or institutions in an English-speaking country.
  • IELTS General Training: This version is usually taken by those planning to migrate to an English-speaking country for work or training purposes.

2. Reading Passage Length:

  • IELTS Academic: The reading passages are more academic and may include complex subject matter.
  • IELTS General Training: The reading passages are more practical and focus on everyday topics.

3. Writing Tasks

  • IELTS Academic: Task 1 involves describing visual information (e.g., charts, graphs), and Task 2 involves presenting an argument or opinion on a given topic.
  • IELTS General Training: Task 1 involves writing a letter in response to a situation, and Task 2 involves writing an essay on a given topic.

4. Listening and Speaking:

  • The listening and speaking sections are the same for both versions.

5. Scoring:

  • Both versions of IELTS are scored on a scale from 0 to 9 bands for each section. However, for reading section, the number of questions correct per band score are different.

6. Test Duration:

  • The total test duration is the same for both versions. It takes 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete all four sections.
